New UK ETA Requirements and Eligible Countries
A few additions to the UK immigration requirements have been introduced in 2025 for travelers. As the world of travel continues to evolve, it is important for travelers coming to the UK to stay on top of any new requirements for international trips.
If you are planning on traveling to the United Kingdom from the United States or other eligible countries, you need to be aware of an important new change in the immigration rules.
The UK has adopted the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) that has been effective since January 8, 2025. So we have this guide that will walk you through the new UK ETA requirements, who needs to apply, and how to get your UK ETA application processed.
What is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a digital travel authorization system designed to streamline entry to the United Kingdom for eligible travelers. Think of it as a modern version of a visa waiver that allows travelers to enter the UK for short stays without going through the full visa application process.
However, applicants for the UK ETA must know that, unlike a visa, an ETA cannot be used to seek employment or paid work in the UK. This ETA simply means for travelers to gain entry for non-commercial activities. Know that this new UK ETA system will apply to most travelers who do not already have a visa or a British or Irish passport.
It is important to understand that an ETA is a digital document, meaning once approved, it will be linked directly to your passport and there will be no physical stamp or visa label. This new UK ETA system aims to simplify travel and improve border security.
Why is the UK ETA Being Implemented?
The UK government introduced the ETA simply for better border security and to track who is entering the country. With this new ETA measure, the UK will have a more efficient way to screen travelers before they even board their flights.
The move also aligns with similar systems introduced in other countries, making travel more secure while reducing the burden on immigration authorities at airports.
Who Is a Suitable Applicant for a UK ETA?
The new UK ETA requirement applies to many travelers, but not everyone will need to apply. Here is a breakdown of who will need the UK ETA and who is exempt:
US Passport Holders
Travelers from the United States will require an ETA in order to enter the United Kingdom, and they should be aware that this has been in effect since January 8, 2025. Know that this includes anyone traveling to the UK for tourism that is short-term, business meetings with a formal invitation letter, or transit purposes.
A traveler who holds a valid US passport will be required to obtain an ETA before boarding a flight to the UK. Know that any traveler with a US passport will not be allowed to board the plane without an ETA.
European Nationals
Starting April 2, 2025, travelers from European Union countries and other European nations will also be required to apply for a UK ETA and this has been in effect since March 5, 2025.
So if you are from an EU country and planning to visit the UK after that date, you will need to submit a UK ETA application.
Non-US Passport Holders
The ETA does not take the place of a visa for visitors from nations where entry into the UK is already subject to one. If you are from a country where a visa is mandatory, you still must obtain a visa to enter the UK. The ETA will not be available for these travelers.
Exemptions
Certain travelers are not required to apply for a UK ETA and these citizens are:
- British and Irish passport holders: British and Irish passport holders are exempt from needing an ETA.
- Travelers with a valid visa: If you already have a valid UK visa or an exempt vignette, you do not need to apply for an ETA.
- Citizens of countries with existing agreements: Some countries may have special agreements with the UK, and their citizens may be exempt from the ETA requirement. However, for most countries, including the US, an ETA will be necessary.
Key Details for UK ETA Applications
As the UK ETA system is being rolled out, there are a few essential points travelers need to know when applying:
Application Process
Online Application: Travelers can apply through UK ETA Portal by submitting the necessary details.
Required Documents
Passport: You will need the physical passport you plan to travel with. Details in your UK ETA should be the same as your passport details.
Contact Information: Your phone number and email you currently use and your home address.
Additional Requirements for Minors
For children under 18, the application will need the contact information of a parent or guardian. This ensures that any minor applying for an ETA is fully supported by their legal guardian.
Face Scan Requirement
When applying through the app, you must provide a face scan as part of the process. This photo helps verify your identity and is linked directly to your application.
Approval and Duration
When your UK ETA application is approved, it will take three business days and will be linked digitally to your passport.
Cost and Timeline
The UK ETA costs £10, which will increase to £16 (approximately $21) starting April 9, 2025. Processing time may take longer as we approach the busy summer travel season, so apply early.
What Happens When an Applicant Fails to Get an ETA?
In case an applicant fails to get a UK ETA, it is simple that the boarding of the traveler at the airport will be denied. Airlines are responsible for verifying that passengers have the proper documentation before they board, so make sure you apply for your ETA well in advance of your travel date to avoid last-minute issues.
What About ETIAS?
Many travelers have heard about ETIAS. The acronyms stand for European Travel Information and Authorization System. While ETIAS will eventually be mandatory for visa-exempt travelers to the Schengen Area, it is not yet in effect and will not be required for your trips in 2026. So, applicants for the UK ETA do not have to worry about ETIAS yet rather, they should focus on the UK ETA.
The Bottom Line
The United Kingdom immigration authorities, by adopting the UK ETA, have taken actions to improve the border security and also simplify the UK ETA process.
If you are a US citizen or from one of the other eligible countries, know that you have to apply for your ETA before traveling in 2025.
