Many people visit the USA every year to explore its beautiful landscape, diverse culture and thriving cities.

However, there are many locations in the USA which are rarely explored by visitors. So, next time you visit the USA, explore the little-known places which have breathtaking views. Plus, you can get a US travel visa simply by applying through a US travel visa application

This blog explores some less-visited locations in the USA which are vibrant and spectacular.

Getting to the USA

Thousands of tourists visit the USA for tourism every year. The USA issues B-2 visitor visas. You can easily travel to the US by filling out the US travel visa application or DS-160 form.

This form is the online non-immigrant visa application form which allows tourists to enter the US for tourism purposes. This online US visit visa application form contains a barcode page that you need to show during the visa interview or during the time of immigration in the airports.

Hidden Natural Wonders

From the awesome beauty of the Grand Canyon to the spectacular Niagara Falls, the USA has everything in its store. You may think these are some pretty common locations that thousands of tourists visit every year, these are on every traveler’s bucket list. However, locations like Great Sand Dunes Park in Colorado and Apostle Islands in Wisconsin are some lesser-visited locations in the US.

Great Sand Dunes Park, Colorado

This park has the tallest dunes in all of North America. You can hike to the dunes, which have an elevation of 750 feet. Also, you can go sandboarding down the steep hills. This place has a unique mix of geographic features, making it a great place to explore.

From its sandy dunes to the fir and aspen trees of the Sangre de Cristos mountains, there is a lot to explore there.

Hamilton Pool Preserve, Texas

A buzzworthy landmark in Texas, Hamilton Pool Preserve has a unique natural beauty. Considered one of the hidden gems in Texas, Hamilton Pool is a collapsed underground river which formed a grotto formation. There is also a waterfall which spills from limestone, forming a sinkhole.

Apostle Islands Ice Caves, Wisconsin

During the winter, the landscape of the Apostle Islands fills with snow and ice. The Apostle Islands have been an attraction for the people, as they are attracted by the dazzling shoreline ice caves.

These caves are located on Apostle Island, in the larger area of Lake Superior. They can however, only be reached when the conditions are good enough for a solid mass of ice to form.

These caves are connected with the mainland unit of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Seeing an arctic landscape unfolding is itself a brilliant way to enjoy it.

Secluded Beaches and Coastal Escape

The beaches in the US are global attractions for diverse natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Tourists look for sunbathing and water sports in the coastal areas of the US and look for unique ecosystems.

Bowman’s Beach, Florida

Located in Sanibel Island, Florida, Bowman’s Beach is an uncrowded stretch of shoreline. You can stroll around the beach over lagoons and sandy trails. Activities include swimming and shelling. Moreover, you can take part in a beachcombing expedition, gathering Cockles and Conch shells.

Shi Shi Beach, Washington

Towards the Northern Olympic coast, you will find Shi Shi Beach. We would recommend visiting this beach during the low tide. You will get to see the mounds of land rising up through the sea against the backdrop of the hills.

You can also engage yourself in whale watching from the beach.

Carova Beach, North Carolina

An underdeveloped set of beaches and one of the most beautiful in the Outer Banks, Carova Beach is a distinctive beach.

You can enjoy the beauty and elegance of this area where development or urbanization has not entered much. Activities here include watching the Corolla Wild Horses and birdwatching in Currituck National Wildlife Refuge.

Offbeat Small Towns and Habitats

The sublime tranquility and peacefulness of the small towns in the US have gained a special spot among travelers.

Global tourists visit small towns to see the authentic cultural immersion, providing a rustic picture of American Villages. To escape from the bustling cities crowd, these offbeat US villages you can explore.

Leavenworth, Washington

At the centre of Washington state, Leavenworth is one of the vibrant small towns. The Bavarian-themed architecture of the town adds to the majestic landscapes of the location. You will feel like time is passing slowly in this small town.

Plus, Leavenworth is the home of Northwest’s finest wineries, as the area’s mild and dry climate elevates the quality of the wines.

Solvang, California

This town resembles a small piece of Denmark in California. If you travel to Solvang during September, you can participate in the Danish festivities, which are significant events in Danish society.

We would also recommend going horseback riding in the Santa Ynez Valley for an additional thrilling experience.

A significant Danish food-tasting event also takes place in this village, offering authentic Danish cuisine.

Bisbee, Arizona

Another hidden gem in Arizona is Bisbee, which is spectacular because of its Old World Architectural buildings.  A must-see place to see here is the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum. You can also opt for a Copper Queen Mine Tour, where you can take a closer look at the 1500 feet deeper tunnels.

Hidden Historical and Cultural Sites

The US has a rich history and cultural background, which enables tourists coming to the country to explore the historical sites. Here are some underrated historical and cultural sites in the US that connects with the past and tradition.

This place is located close to the Mississippi River, and is located in Southwest Illinois. It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In this place, an advanced civilization was established which was once the largest prehistoric civilization in Northern Mexico. You can visit the famous Monk Mound which is towering 100 feet tall and has a pyramid shape. You can climb on top of it and enjoy the wide view of the terrain.

Watkins Museum of History, Kansas

A three-storey Red building located in Lawrence, Kansas, Watkins Museum of History hosts programs which explore the rich history of Douglas County. It is a historical building carrying fragments of history. If you are interested in local history, this is a great place to explore.

The House on the Rock, Wisconsin

It is a unique place in America, which is often incorrectly linked with Frank Lloyd Wright, since it was inspired by it. That’s because Frank Lloyd Wright built a house on a hill, and called it Taliesin, or House on the Hill.

On the other hand, a native of  Wisconsin named Alex Jordan built the House on The Rock  when he discovered a rock chimney in a place known as Spring Green.

This house has many curiosities, which you should explore. You can see a huge carousel, model ships and various other displays here.

Unique Wildlife Experiences

Experiencing wildlife in the US is a memorable experience for travelers. From historically preserved ecosystems to diverse greenery, the US has almost everything to explore.

Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia

Okefenokee Swamp is the home of many endangered species of wildlife. The swamp covers around 700 square miles of the area, protecting the wildlife. This is a critical and biodiverse wetland important to the flora and fauna of the location.

It is located in  the southwestern region of Georgia. However, you should be careful, since the place is well known for its alligators. You can explore the entire swamp by renting a Kayak or Canoe, or opt for guided boat tours.

During the tour, you’ll also see birds, and snakes.

Elkhorn Slough, California

To spend some time among sea otters, seals and a biodiverse environment, you must visit Elkhorn Slough in California. Elkhorn Slough has an immense diversity of plants, and migrating birds that fly through the Pacific Flyway.

Activities include kayaking and bird-watching. Plus, you can access the tidal creeks to explore the location more closely.

With a current GDP of $30.340 trillion, the USA is the largest economy in the world. A large number of tourists visit every year. This isn’t just for exploring the country’s beauty and culture, but also for seeking better career and employment opportunities. Well, one such nationality that ranks second on the list of immigrants is India.

Many Indians enter the USA every year to seek better opportunities and also for family reunification. So, if you are also one of them, then you will have to start your process by applying for a U.S. visa. However, that is not all that one requires to immigrate to the country. So, individuals need to understand the complete process before they take any step.

Choosing the Right Visa Type

The first thing that you will have to understand when immigrating to the USA is the visa. This is your travel permit for the journey and helps you explore, work, or settle in the country with ease. However, picking a visa can be more complicated than it seems, as the country offers different types of visas. Some of the visas that you will be required to choose from are:

Work Visa Options

The Immigration Department of the USA has designed multiple work visas. For instance:

The H-1B visa falls under the temporary visa category that allows you to work in “specialty occupations,” which require a bachelor’s degree or something of its equivalent. This allows people to seek lawful permanent residency. The applicants for this visa are also allowed to bring their spouse or unmarried children under the age of 21. The H-1B visa initially grants a 3-year stay in the U.S., which can be extended for a maximum of 6 years, after which the visa holder will have to apply for permanent residency.

The EB-1 visa is specifically for priority workers. Renowned professors, researchers, and executives or managers of multinational companies fall under this category. This stays valid as long as you maintain your status and comply with the immigration laws.

The L-1 visa is for employees of MNCs transferred to the U.S. branch of their company and will have to continue serving in their role there. This visa allows people to get lawful permanent residency along with their spouse and unmarried children under 21 years old. The initial validity is 3 years and can be extended up to 7 years.

An O-1 visa is for anyone who has extraordinary abilities in fields like art, athletics, science, or business and is seeking employment in that field. This does not require any specific job offer, rather, it judges the professional abilities and achievements of the applicant. The initial validity is 3 years and comes with a one-year increment.

EB-2 visa is designed for those professionals with advanced degrees and ‘exceptional ability’. Some applicants for this visa might also qualify for a National Interest Waiver*. The validity of this one isn’t fixed.

The EB-3 visa is especially for skilled workers with at least two years of training or experience. They should also have a bachelor’s degree or a foreign equivalent of that. The validity of this visa is 10 years, and it is renewable.

*The National Interest Waiver is designed to waive the general requirements of a job offer and labour certification.

Study and Education Visa Options

The F-1 visa is the only one of its kind that offers indirect pathways to permanent residence. This is generally a temporary nonimmigrant visa, but the individual who carries out the United States online visa application for this visa can still consider becoming a permanent resident of the U.S. while they are studying in America. The validity of this visa is 5 years and allows multiple entries. Indian students who plan to immigrate to the country will have to convert their F-1 student visa to a Green Card. They will have to do this via an H-1B or L-1 visa.

How to Get a Visa for Immigrating to the USA?

Getting a US visa is simple, and you are just required to follow the process of applying for a U.S. visa. Depending on the type of visa you get, this can be done in two ways: online and offline. Let us briefly walk through both processes to make things easy for you.

Online Visa Application

The steps of the online visa application are:

  • Visit the visa application portal and check your eligibility
  • Complete the form with correct details.
  • Add the scanned copies of necessary documents, like a valid passport (one with at least 2 blank pages and a minimum of 6 months validity beyond travel dates), a recent passport-sized photograph, bank statements to prove financial ability, flight tickets, and documents related to the travel purpose. Other than that, you should check the other visa requirements for the USA.
  • Pay the fee for the visa application through a debit or credit card.
  • Wait around 3 to 5 days to get the visa application approved. Then you will receive an approval letter at the email ID that you provided on your application form.
  • Get a few copies of the letter and bring them to the airport during immigration.

Contact the Helpdesk in case you face any delay.

Application through Embassy or Consulate

The steps of the offline application for an American visa through the embassy or consulate are:

  • Visit the embassy or consulate near you.
  • Complete the form with correct details.
  • Add necessary documents, like a valid passport, copies of recent passport-sized photographs, flight tickets, bank statements, and other things required by the Immigration department related to your travel purpose.
  • Make payment.
  • Attend the interview if required.
  • Wait 5 to 10 days for the application to get approved.
  • Collect the passport with a sticker visa after a few days.

Financial Planning for the Move

Planning your finances is important for migrating to the USA from India. So, start by planning for the following things before you start applying for a U.S. visa.

  • Check the cost of living. This should include your cost of food, transportation, and residency, like rent.
  • Open an account with a US bank and transfer some funds in it. This will help you make easy payments when you move to America.
  • Understand the taxation regulations of America and double taxation agreements*.
  • Invest in health insurance for yourself and your family, and understand the average medical costs in America.

*The double taxation agreements between India and the USA state that if any interest income arises in India, the amount of which belongs to a US resident, then the amount will be taxable in the USA. That being said, the said interest will be liable to tax in India according to the Indian Income Tax Act.

Finding Employment in the USA

Finding good employment in the USA isn’t that tough, especially because the country offers multiple employment opportunities to talented individuals. However, you will have to keep a few things in mind which are as important as the visa requirements for the USA. Some of the things that you will have to keep in mind to grab these opportunities are:

  • The best job sectors for Indian immigrants are IT, healthcare, and finance. So, try something there.
  • Network with US-based employers and use job search portals to unveil the best opportunities.
  • Understand the work culture and expectations in American workplaces.  The workplace heavily focuses on individualism, direct communication, and performance-driven growth. It also values initiative, accountability, and open discussions, and promotes collaboration and teamwork.

Housing and Accommodation

Accommodation plays a major part in this move. Some of the things that you should remember are:

  • Renting is always better than buying a home, especially when you are just starting. This is because the cost of buying a home can be pretty high.
  • The best cities for Indian immigrants based on tech hubs, affordability, and Indian communities are Austin, Atlanta, and Fremont.

Legal and Immigration Considerations

Some of the legal requirements that you will have to comply with are:

  • Maintain a legal status and practice visa renewals.
  • Apply for US citizenship to get permanent residency.
  • Understand the US immigration policies and keep up with potential changes.

Feeling confident to immigrate to the USA from India?

Moving your base from India to the USA can be a stressful experience as it brings in many changes. But, you can make it easy by understanding the process and steps for applying for a U.S. visa. This way, you will feel more prepared to move to the country and build your life there in a better way.

Food plays a big role in any trip. It tells you about the culture of a place and gives you a shot at understanding the lifestyle of the people around there. The same logic applies to the United States of America.

So, if you are traveling to the country with a tourist visa for the USA, like the 35.16 million visitors who visited the USA in 2024,  you must try the famous cuisines of the country.

However, as someone who is trying to dive into this exploration for the first time, you might face some difficulty in understanding which foods you must try during your trip. This is why it is important that you learn about the famous American dishes before you start on your exploration.

Iconic American Dishes You Must Try

Just like its stronghold in movies, America is also famous for its iconic food. From traditional food items to fast food dishes, there is a long menu that you will be able to access once you visit the country with a tourist visa for the USA from the UK or other parts of the world. Some of these iconic dishes include:

Classic American Burgers

From movies to famous advertisements, a classic American Burger has made its mark everywhere. Although this first came into existence in the 1880s through Fletcher Davis, it got its first rise to fame in 1904. This dish has changed a lot throughout the years, with some establishments adding cheese and others adding salad or pickles.

However, the craze among the people has remained the same. It is still one of the go-to orders for many Americans at different cafes and drive-through spots.  Some places you can check out are In-N-Out and Shake Shack on the  West and East Coast, respectively. You can also try the local establishments around the country by asking the locals.

BBQ Ribs and Brisket

Named as America’s smoked delights, this is a go-to backyard party food for most Americans. Although it first originated in the islands in the Caribbean Sea, this is now a staple across the country.

Different states have different approaches to making these. For instance, Memphis is popular for a dry-rubbed version, and Carolina barbecue is more about the whole hog or pork shoulder which comes with a distinct vinegar-based sauce.

On the other hand, Texas is famous for slow-smoked dry-rubbed meats, the star of which is the brisket. This also comes with a slightly sweet flavor due to the sauces and seasoning.

The best spots for this after getting your tourist visa for the USA are Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que in Kansas City, The Salt Lick in Driftwood, and Pappy’s Smokehouse in St. Louis, MO.

Mac and Cheese

If one has to survey the top comfort foods of the country then this one will top the list. This is a staple in American households, from everyday dinner to movie nights Mac and Cheese is the go-to option for most.

You can make this dish at home too.  However, if you are someone who has never tried the authentic American version of this in your life then you will find difficulty in making this.

So, it’s best to try it first so that you can cook it on your own once you return to your home country. Some of our top picks for the creamiest and most indulgent versions of this dish are Modern Market Eatery, Chick-fil-A, The Cheesecake Factory, and Homeroom.

Fried Chicken

This is another dish that is synonymous with America. Anyone who likes chicken and has traveled to America with a tourist visa for the USA from the UK has tried this dish.

Interestingly, this favorite has its origins in the culinary roots of Scotland and West Africa. It is the Scottish immigrants who brought the deep-frying techniques to America in the 18th century.

Their contact with the Africans then led them to adapt and innovate the dish with their spices and techniques. If you want to dive into the rich flavor of crispy and juicy fried chicken, then you must visit Popeye’s. Chick-fil-A, Bojangles, and KFC.

Hot Dogs

If there is one street food that has stood the test of time, it’s a Hot dog. Due to its popularity, it has quite a few variants. That’s why each country has its signature Hot Dog flavours. For instance, the Chicago dog is all beef with a poppy seed bun, which is topped with mustard, tomato slices, chopped onions, and even a pickle spear.

On the other hand, the one from Coney Island is a beef frankfurter that comes in a steamed bun and is topped with special savory meat sauce, famous in the area, and some mustard and onion.

However, New York City dogs (as hot dogs are colloquially known) are quite famous. This is all beef and comes in a soft, hot dog bun. Other than that, it is also topped with homemade onion relish, brown mustard and sauerkraut.

Some of the must-visit hot dog stands and diners are Billy’s Hot Dog Cart in New York City, Rutt’s Hut in New Jersey, and Happy Dog in Ohio.

Clam Chowder and Seafood Specialties

If you are someone who has a love for seafood, then you must try Clam Chowder when visiting the country with a tourist visa for the USA. This dish was first served at what is America’s oldest restaurant today, the Ye Olde Union Oyster House, located in Boston.

This dish contains clams, diced potatoes, salt pork, and onions. It has a savory flavor, which makes it a hit among people. However, there are a few variations in it depending on the location. For instance, you won’t get the same mix of flavours in New England as you would get in Manhattan.

The former is famous for a Clam Chowder that comes with milk or cream, while the one from Manhattan has a tomato-based broth and contains vegetables like celery and carrot. The best seafood spots in America are Le Bernardin in New York City, Holbox in Los Angeles, and Blue Seafood & Spirits in Virginia Beach.

Apple Pie

This one is the quintessential American dessert, so it is a must for all to try. This dish is so famous that there is a famous quote that goes “as American as apple pie”, dating back to World War II.

Although apple pie itself has roots in Europe, Americans adopted and embraced it. The best homemade apple pie is Emporium Pies in Dallas, Elegant Farmer in Wisconsin, and Pie Hut in Idaho.

How Do You Access Famous American Food?

Well, to experience the true blue American dishes, you will have to first enter the country, and for that, you will need to meet a few requirements. Some of these are:

Have a Passport:

Make sure you have a valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity from the day you return from the country, and at least two blank pages. You should also check your eligibility criteria.

Get a Visa:

If you are solely traveling to America to explore its cuisine, then you will be required to get a B-2 visitor visa or tourist visa for the USA from the UK or other countries. Applying for this visa involves a few steps, some of which are:

  • Visit the online portal.
  • Access the application form and fill in all essential details.
  • Attach the documents required for the online application like scanned copies of passport, recent passport-sized photograph, travel itinerary, bank statements, and other things required by the authority.
  • Pay the required application fee with a valid card.

Important Info:

Wait for a few days (3 to 5) for the application to get approved and receive an approval letter on the email ID provided on your application form once it gets accepted. Remember to print a few copies of the letter to the airport. However, you must contact the Helpdesk if you face a delay.

Feeling confident to travel to America to explore its food?

Now, American cuisine isn’t just about fast food. There are other variations you can explore. So, one thing is for sure, you will have no shortage of food options once you visit this country with a tourist visa for the USA from the UK. Just remember to list all the foods you want to try and ensure you do not miss any of them. Have fun!

Travelers love to watch wildlife while taking a stroll around the national parks. Now that you have the itinerary all sorted, let’s circle back to the entry requirements.

Entry requirements

UK people who are looking to spend their holidays in the USA require some key documents. No USA tourist visa is required for UK citizens for traveling to the USA. An Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is provided to UK tourists visiting the USA for a 90-day or shorter period of time. Here are the documents required and ESTA information you need to know before traveling to the Midwestern USA.

Documents Required

UK residents visiting the USA require these documents:

  • A valid passport with 6 months’ validity from the date of departure.
  • An ESTA document, which guarantees your stay of less than 90 days.

How to Apply for an ESTA to Travel to the USA?

For a traveling period of more than 90 days, a USA visa for UK citizens must be obtained. However, it is generally recommended to get an ESTA for each family member while planning a family trip to the Midwestern cities of the USA.

To apply for an ESTA, here is what you need to do:

  • Prepare your valid passport. Remember, everyone traveling to the USA must have an individual passport and ESTAs.
  • Apply for ESTA online from the official ESTA website, which is maintained and controlled by the US Customs and Border Protection
  • Fill up the application form by filling it thoroughly with the details that are in your passport.
  • Pay the ESTA application fee with your valid debit or credit card
  • It takes a maximum of 72 hours to process your ESTA application.

An ESTA is typically valid for two years or until your passport’s validity ends. You can travel multiple times during this period of two years to the USA.

Can Everyone from the UK Get the ESTA?

No, this is applicable to UK citizens only, that is, those who can hold a British passport. Since the UK is a visa-waiver country for the USA, only valid British passport holders can apply for an American ESTA; anyone residing in the UK but holding citizenship of a different country will have to get an USA tourist visa (provided they are not from a Visa Waiver nation). You will not get an ESTA if you have any kind of immigration issue. Moreover, if you have a criminal history in the UK or any other country, your ESTA application will be rejected.

Plus, if you have any other reason to travel to the UK apart from tourism and business, ESTA is not the right documentation to obtain. Similarly, you can not take part in any type of part-time job during your vacation in the USA using the ESTA. Although getting an ESTA does not solidify your entry to the USA, the final decisions are made by the customs authorities of the USA. Staying more than 90 days using an ESTA is also considered illegal and can lead to penalties like a ban on re-entering the country for 3 to 10 years.

Hence, it is important to check important details and requirements before applying for an ESTA for the USA.
