A Brief Note on Transit
If you’re transiting to a UK airport and won’t go through customs, you typically won’t need an ETA. If your transit does involve going through immigration (e.g., changing airports, long layovers), you’ll likely need an ETA.
What the UK ETA Does Not Cover
It’s strictly important to understand that the UK ETA does not replace a full UK visa. It’s for the already “visa-exempt” travelers only.
You cannot apply for the ETA to settle permanently in the UK, to work, or to study for long periods (unless special immigration rules exempt certain short-term cases). For those purposes, you need a specific visa category.
Who Needs to Apply for a UK ETA?
Essentially, if you are from a country whose citizens do not usually need a visa to enter the UK, then you will be required to apply for a UK ETA before your visit. Some of these include EU residents, among others.
Who Does Not Need to Obtain a UK ETA?
One will not need to apply for an ETA if you fall under one of these categories:
- If they currently hold a valid UK visa (or need one for the reason of your visit).
- They’re British.
- If they are Irish.
If they currently hold official leave to work, study, or live in the UK (such as settled status, indefinite leave to remain).
UK ETA for Minors- Traveling with Family
Every traveler, young or old – yes, even infants – will need their own individual UK ETA. You can easily apply for your children if you’re parents or guardians. If you’re using our online service, you can easily enter several travelers as part of a single application session just by selecting the ‘add another person’ option. This saves you from having to start again for every family member.
If the child is traveling with someone other than his or her legal guardian or by himself, the border immigration agents can ask for additional documentation, for instance, a letter of consent endorsed by the parents. It is always better to have such documents in place.
UK ETA Validity and Benefits
After your UK ETA has been authorized, you’re ready for several visits to the UK over a 2-year validity period. This gives you great flexibility as a frequent visitor. Every single visit may extend up to 6 months, which will give you plenty of time to discover or carry out your business.

Documents Needed for Your UK ETA Application

A Clear Photocopy of Your Valid Passport
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your planned arrival date in the UK. It must also have some blank pages for any potential stamps.
A Recent Passport-Style Photo
